Welcome These are our Goats

Goats

We raise goats ranging in breeds from Boer and Kiko to  Nubian. We love having a variety of breeds so that we can provide goats for different market demands. Boer goats, originating from South Africa, are meat goats that are most commonly used for competing in county fairs and national goat shows. Kiko goats, originating from New Zealand, are meat goats that are especially hardy and worm-resistant. Nubian goats, originating from England, are categorized as dairy goats.

Our goats are raised with care, free to roam in the pastures and woods on the farm in Union, SC.  We currently have some billys available on our “Available Now” page under the “Products” tab.

Goats Why did we choose to raise goats?

Goats

For Food

Goat meat (or chevon) isn’t readily available in American supermarkets, but American producers have a tough time keeping up with the demand for this lean, high protein alternative to beef. Most of our supply in this country is imported from Australia (there is about a 750,000 head deficiency in meeting current US demand for goat meat).

Who is eating all of this goat meat you ask? Restaurants catering to health-conscious foodies for one. With low saturated fat and the omega 3s and fatty acids they consume, goat is the healthiest of red meat. It also offers incredible flavor and texture. The larger consumer base, however, is the vast ethnic population who call the USA home. Caribbeans, Hispanics, Middle Easterners, Southeastern Asians, and Africans all love goat meat! We want to help meet the local need with fresh product and superior quality to the imports.

For Breeding

We love to help new or established farmers add to their herd by providing healthy, closed system nannies and bucks through our Union farm. Our goats are free range and have access to our 350-acre farm with a wide variety of shrubs, grasses, and small trees for optimal nutrition. Our guardian dogs allow them to remain safe outdoors. We encourage you to make an appointment and see how our goats are cared for and to learn about their diet and healthcare.

Turk & Holly

Farm Life Guardian Dogs

Meat goats have plenty of predators on the farm, especially newborn kids. While some farms employ donkeys and llamas for protection, we’ve chosen two reliable guardian dogs – Turk and Otto. Not only do they keep a watchful eye day and night, they live with the goats and bond with them just like they are family. They even train our newborn goats with the discipline of an old-fashioned school teacher, ensuring they don’t wander too far.

We often get asked about our large (well over 100 pounds) and powerful dogs on the farm because they aren’t commonly seen around this country. Otto and Turk are Kangals, an ancient guardian livestock breed from Turkey. While they are impressively large and feature typical territorial instincts towards outsiders, they are known to be loyal and gentle to their family members.

Cool facts: Otto and Turk each need about 3,000 calories per day to maintain their diet. Their speed is also formidable, they are capable of running 30 mph!
